Virat Kohli Has to Use His Brains Bette

r: Geoffrey BoycottWellington: Former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe has said Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steven Smith and Kane Williamson are the new "fabulous four" of Test Cricket but will go through "teething problems" before shooting for the stars.

Calling them "leading young bucks in Test cricket today", Crowe said - Williamson from New Zealand, Kohli from India, Root from England, and Smith from Australia "are seriously earmarked as future captains of their countries."

"Prior to hitting peak period for a Test batsman, between age 24 and 32, the young player will go through teething problems, highs and lows, swings of fortune, before shooting for the stars. If he is destined, he will learn quickly and climb the ladder to become the best of his time," he said in his column on a website.

Noting that all four have had a period of extreme failure, Crowe said they have the hunger to go on to be the best.

Detailing Kohli's career, Crowe said he started off on a high in one-dayers to become the heir apparent to Tendulkar.

"Then disaster struck. In his last ten innings he has hit absolute rock bottom, with a need to assess and start again. Despite a solid technique with no obvious weakness - which produced centuries in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand - he has found the late-swinging ball in England to be his nemesis. In short, his footwork needs to be more decisive in getting close to the ball, shutting down late movement," the New Zealand skipper said.

He said all four each shown one obvious weakness at some point, but not more than that.

"They have been able to overcome problems, with a permanent batting position locked down being the key. Only Kohli has shown a need to correct a glaring weakness exposed at this stage of development," he said.

Noting that all four have similar talent, hunger, ambition and responsibility, Crowe predicted that the four will go on to captain their respective countries.

"All four will reach peak form in a few years' time, and then the real battle will commence as to who will be the No. 1 batsman in the world," he said.

"My sense is that they will all take turns as the No. 1 Test batsman, while Kohli already has the one-day mantle in his sights. Maybe it is his prowess in, and preference for, the limited-over formats that will hold him back in Tests? Maintaining one's game while playing three different formats is the most challenging aspect confronting the modern-day batsman," he opined.

Rohit Established to Skip CLT20, Pollard Gonna Cause Mumbai Indians.

Star batsman Rohit Sharma's finger fracture is not only a blow to the Indian team but a big setback for Mumbai Indians as well, who will be playing in the qualifiers of the Champions League T20 starting September 13, in Raipur.

With Rohit sustaining a fractured middle finger during the second ODI against England at Cardiff, it is unlikely that he will play any part during MI's qualifying round matches in Raipur, which kicks off with a match against Lahore Lions.

As of now, dashing West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard looks a likely candidate to lead the popular T20 franchise.

"While Pollard is an automatic choice in the MI set-up, his success as the captain having led the Barbados Tridents to title triumph in the recently concluded Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will go in his favour. But Harbhajan should also be sounded out," a source in the know of things told PTI today.

Among the senior players, there is Harbhajan Singh, under whom Mumbai Indians won the Champions League T20 in 2012 but according to reliable sources is not too keen on leading the side. Harbhajan, who is fighting to make a comeback is more interested in performing well for the Mukesh Ambani-owned team.

Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga is also one of the senior players in the side and had also led Sri Lanka to ICC World T20 triumph after being handed over the captaincy mid-way due to sudden dip in Dinesh Chandimal's form.

Aussie batsman Michael Hussey's place in the playing XI is not assured, which can be a reason that he won't be considered for the hot-seat.

If fit and available, the four first-choice overseas players are likely to be Lendl Simons, Kieron Pollard, Corey Anderson and Lasith Malinga.

The MI will certainly be seeking a replacement for the injured Rohit, who incidentally also sustained a finger fracture during 2011 tour of England.

Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Ambati Rayudu, Pragyan Ojha, Praveen Kumar, Aditya Tare, Jalaj Saxena, Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Gopal, Michael Hussey, Kieron Pollard, Corey Anderson, Lasith Malinga, Marchant de Lange, Lendl Simmons.

Meanwhile, Peng Shuai beat another seeded player at the U.S. Open to reach her second straight
Grand Slam round of 16.

Two days after upsetting fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, Peng defeated 28th-seeded Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-3 on Friday. The Chinese veteran had gone two years without making it past the second round at a major tournament before her Wimbledon run this summer. However, she didn't meet any seeded players in the first three rounds there before losing to eventual champion Petra Kvitova in straight sets.

Peng, ranked 39th, will face 14th-seeded Lucie Safarova or 22nd-seeded Alize Cornet to try to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal

South Africa was kept to a mediocre total of 231 at Harare Sports Club but was saved by its bowlers as Zimbabwe's batsmen succumbed under the pressure.

Sean Williams made 46 for Zimbabwe in the middle order but was the only Zimbabwean to threaten South Africa's attack. He was furious with himself for his error when he was caught by Hashim Amla off McLaren with the score on 138-5. Zimbabwe collapsed after that.

McLaren finished with 3-24 and Steyn 3-36 to take South Africa to two wins from two in the tournament after beating top-ranked Australia on Wednesday.

Zimbabwe had a good chance of a first win in the series after spinner Prosper Utseya took a hat trick in his 5-36 to restrict the Proteas at Harare Sports Club.

But Steyn, McLaren and two valuable wickets from left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso meant Zimbabwe didn't come close to the target and took South Africa to the top of the three-team standings. Australia plays Zimbabwe in the next game on Sunday.

Utseya's career-best return in ODIs had given the home team a good chance of a first victory over South Africa in 14 years. South African openers Hashim Amla (66) and Quinton de Kock (76) both made half-centuries in a 142-run opening stand before Utseya intervened, taking the first five wickets including De Kock, Rilee Rossouw and David Miller in consecutive deliveries.

It was the second hat trick by a Zimbabwean in ODIs after Eddo Brandes against England in 1997 at the same Harare ground and Utseya celebrated by falling onto his back and kicking his feet up in the air as teammates mobbed him. Utseya is also on report over a suspected illegal action but is allowed to bowl pending tests.

Utseya was backed up by fellow offspinner John Nyumbu, who took 3-42.

Zimbabwe was never settled in its chase, though, after Tino Mawoyo was run out with the score on one. Phangiso took the crucial wickets of Hamilton Masakadza (25) and Brendan Taylor for a duck as he beat both of Zimbabwe's most experienced batsmen to rattle their stumps.

Steyn and McLaren did the rest, with McLaren taking two wickets in two balls near the end and threatening to claim the second hat trick of the game.

Mercedes Discipline Nico Rosberg Over Spa Collision
A crash at the Belgian Grand Prix last weekend that Nico Rosberg took responsibility of after a brutal collision, effectively ended Lewis Hamilton's hopes of victory and placed him second in the Formula One drivers' championship table behind Mercedes teammate Rosberg.
Nico Rosberg was disciplined by Mercedes on Friday after accepting responsibility for a collision with teammate Lewis Hamilton at last weekend's Belgian Grand Prix that deepened the rift between the two rivals for the drivers' title.

The tension between the Mercedes pair ratcheted up Sunday when Hamilton claimed Rosberg had admitted to deliberately driving into him on the second lap of the race at Spa. The crash effectively ended Hamilton's hopes of victory - he sustained a puncture to his tire and had to later retire - and Rosberg placed second to increase his championship lead over Hamilton to 29 points.

The two drivers attended a meeting at the team's headquarters in Brackley, England, on Friday along with executive director Toto Wolff and technical chief Paddy Lowe, where Mercedes said Rosberg "acknowledged his responsibility for the contact" and "apologized for this error of judgement." (Also read: Rosberg booed after crash punctures Hamilton's hopes)

"Suitable disciplinary measures have been taken for the incident," the team added in a statement, without disclosing the exact punishment for Rosberg.

"Lewis and Nico understand and accept the team's No. 1 rule: there must be no contact between the team's cars on track. It has been made clear that another such incident will not be tolerated. But Nico and Lewis are our drivers and we believe in them."

Rosberg tops the drivers' standings on 220 points, with Hamilton in second place on 191.

"They remain free to race for the 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship," Mercedes said.

Hamilton was incensed by Rosberg's risky overtaking move that saw him clip and puncture the Briton's left tire.

"He said he did it on purpose," Hamilton said after the race. "He said he could have avoided it. He said 'I did it to prove a point.'"

The incident further damaged a relationship that has been in freefall as they chase the drivers' title this season.

At last month's Hungarian GP, Hamilton refused team orders to let Rosberg pass.

At the Monaco GP in May, Hamilton was unhappy when Rosberg crashed late in qualifying when under no pressure, leading to a safety car coming out and squandering Hamilton's chances of securing pole position.

Hamilton and Rosberg were close friends during their junior days racing karts against each other.

The english language avid gamers drawing near disintegration with top Leading Group clubs.

Where are England`s home players in elite clubs playing in the Premier League? It`s a serious issue that has struck the face of English football and the current scenario looks far from impressive and is a worry for the future of Three Lions team.

On Sunday`s FA Community Shield match between Arsenal and Manchester City, only three home grown players started the game out of 22 on the field. All three were from Arsenal. Manchester City had none with Joe Hart sitting on the bench.

Earlier, in May, when asked about the role and numbers of English players, City`s manager Manuel Pellegrini had stated the home grown players are very costly and with the financial fair play rules, it becomes tough for them to have English players. The Premier League constitutes a huge influx of foreign players and going forward, the numbers are expected to increase further.

English players have the lowest ratio in playing for other European clubs in different nations as the mindset is set to play at home. Therefore, where are the players in big teams?

There has been widespread criticism from all corners with the worrisome figures of English players and the problem lies within the crux of its depth. England had a World Cup to forget in Brazil and the next major tournament, Euro 2016, too will cause immense problems for Roy Hodgson if this trend continues.

There are several factors that determine the threat of the footballing situation in England and the world`s most followed league faces a major calamity in terms of English player representation. Let`s have a look at some major factors hampering the growth of British players.

1. Impact of foreign players: There is a demand for players from other nationalities and the number is rising day by day. European and African nations have major chunks of players in the Premier League, and recently, Brazil and other South American nations are becoming an interesting destination to choose from. Foreign players add a lot of vitality and embark a fashion statement of the brand football has associated itself with in current time. The contribution of foreign players in England is a noteworthy presentation and over the years, their presence has overshadowed the Englishmen. The impact foreigners have here sells for any top club and the quest for silverware often blinds the eye in giving promising home talent
e current trend doesn`t allow promising home talent to shine in major clubs challenging for the title. Over the years, barring some very few players that have come out from academies and made a name in top clubs, the numbers now have minimised further. The youth are subjected to the `Reserve team` and then shipped out to clubs that play in the lower divisions. The mid-table clubs have been a chief contributor of English players to the bigger clubs and also the England national team. The average of 3-4 English players that the top teams possess are all from lower clubs rather than their academies. With the lower clubs not having much say in the transfer activities, their promising English players are then subjected to audacious bids from the richer ones and that`s where Pellegrini was right in citing the valuation of top local players being so high.

3. A lot depends on the manager: The managers of top clubs have played a major role in causing a downfall of players from England. With the managerial stability that has been wiped out with hunger for success, every new manager then comes in, tends to go persist with a vision best suited to his style. For the richer clubs, this has been a major issue with managers mainly going for foreign players after getting the financial back up. Over the years, several promising English players have become a shadow of their former selves under foreigners. Micah Richards, Jack Rodwell, and Adam Johnson are few of the names that looked to deliver at the big stage but faltered with lack of playing time. This is where a manager plays a big role. Only the likes of Everton`s Roberto Martinez and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger have utilised the academies to a better extent than their counterparts. Several young players have got chances to play for these clubs and are making a mark.

4. Horrific statistics: After Manchester City won the Premier League last season with only two English players in the main team, this season presents a further shocking display in the represenation of home grown players. The likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham will field a total of only 3-4 English players between

Often several good players with potential are bought by bigger clubs and then their role gets diminished with latest example of City`s Jack Rodwell facing the brunt. These players then go back to smaller clubs in search for regular game time. A lot of promising youngsters miss the chance of playing in the Champions League and hence their experience against Europe`s elite takes a hit.

Another important factor, are the owners of these clubs, who are mainly from other nations and their primary goal is to win trophies. Therefore, the desire of buying world`s best players becomes a priority and their main business. Football has become a performance based tactic rather than a philosophy based game.
themselves. Out of 33 players starting a game for these three teams collectively, the numbers 3-4, present a ghastly scenario. On days it might be none if regulars Joe Hart (City), Gary Cahill (Chelsea) and Andres Townsend (Tottenham) don`t play.

US Open 2014: Men’s singles – Preview

At Wimbledon 2014, many believed Swiss legend Roger Federer had the best chance to end his Grand Slam drought. The way he was moving on the court, would have put many youngsters on the tour to shame. Federer played his best tennis till the final, where Serbian Novak Djokovic ended his resilience in what was a scintillating contest.

This year`s Wimbledon was another fine example of the amount of hard work the Swiss legend has been putting into his game. With age, his reflexes have slowed down, as a result of which Federer isn`t impeccable with his strokes anymore. It is amazing, how even at 33, Federer looks this fit on a tennis court.

In a year, where he has improved his game and has given a glimmer of hope to his fans, Federer is one of the favourites for the US Open. And Rafael Nadal pulling out at the last moment has only enhanced his chances of doing well in the last Grand Slam of the year.

Federer is now seeded second after Nadal`s exit and he is likely to face Djokovic in the final if both of them remain unbeaten till then.

Federer has been lucky with his draw as well. Djokovic will be challenged by the likes of Stanislas Wawrinka, Andy Murray, Milos Raonic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. On the other hand, Federer will have two major obstacles in David Ferrer and Grigor Dimitrov.

The problem with Federer`s current game is his reliability on the serve and volley approach. While he looks extremely confident till the quarters and the semis, he is seen struggling when he is up against the likes of Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The two champions are aware of Federer`s current strategy, as a result of which the Swiss has lost several points from the net in the last few years.

It is amazing how once, irrespective of the country, court and the Grand Slam, Federer was the clear favourite to win any tournament. Despite his struggle, experts too believe he has a fair chance at the US Open 2014.

But the way he fought at the Wimbledon final, it w
as a statement for his opponents that one can`t write off Federer so easily. A title at the Cincinnati Master, after defeating David Ferrer in the final, was a good build up to the US Open for the 17-time Grand Slam champion. A Federer-Ferrer tussle is still a distinct possibility at Flushing Meadows at the semis, but the contest which should be fun to watch is between the maestro and his understudy, baby Federer – Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian is seen as a future star, and is likely to give a tough competition to the Swiss.

Federer, who is known for his past dominance at the Wimbledon, also won five consecutive titles at the US Open from 2004-08. Since then, he has struggled to even reach the final, which has been the case for him in most of the Majors.

Roger Federer fans will once again come to Flushing Meadows, expecting his 18th Grand Slam title. While they would be deprived of a Federer vs Nadal contest, they wouldn`t mind another title for the Swiss in Nadal`s absence.

With the US Open just round the corner, excitement is brewing among fans to see who sparkles at the Flushing Meadows this year.

As the first three Majors of the year have been won by three different individuals, it is but natural for fans to think of a new champion for the American Major too.

While the Australian Open saw the phenomenal rise of Stan Wawrinka, dominant Rafael Nadal was at his best at the Roland Garros. Novak Djokovic was the man in the All England’s Club at Wimbledon.

But then there’s news. There is no Rafa this year to defend his crown. So, the fourth and last Major of the year 2014 – US Open – will miss the mighty Spaniard. It seems injuries and Nadal go hand in hand! It’s not for the first time he has been ruled out of a Grand Slam due to injury. Over the years, we have seen the champion struggling with his own body, more than his opponents.

It was just prior to the event that Rafa let the news out. He sustained a wrist injury at a training schedule after Wimbledon this year, and won’t be able to defend his title.

This leads to an interesting clash at the US Open.

Djokovic is seeded number one, followed by Roger Federer at number two, Wawrinka is seeded number three, followed by David Ferrer.

While Djokovic and Federer won’t meet until the finals, Andy Murray, seeded eighth, has a big task ahead. After a spectacular 2012, he seems to have disappeared into oblivion.

On the other hand, Federer has had a remarkable comeback in 2014, where he reached the Wimbledon final and won the Cincinnati Masters recently. He also reached the finals of Rogers Cup, but lost to Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Though the discussion of the Big Four has somewhat subsided, it is always the four – Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, and Murray – who are the most talked about players for title contention at Majors.

Probably, records are at stake when they win. Federer is now hungry for his 18th title, Novak for the second Major for this year. Murray needs some more wins to get his confidence back, after his recovery from the surgery last year.

Though he made it to the semi-finals of this year`s French Open, he couldn’t go beyond the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Also, around the periphery, some other names are doing the rounds these days – Spaniard David Ferrer, Canadian Milos Raonic, Czech Tomas Berdych and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. Frenchman Tsonga would be on a high after winning the Rogers Cup, though he is yet to produce that winning play at Majors, other than causing upsets in the earlier rounds. Another man with rising expectations is the Japanese Kei Nishikori. He has played some spectacular matches over the last few months, raising his own standards each time. Hopes would be high on Dimitrov too. The young man has had quite eventful Majors this year.

With Nadal out of contention, one thing is for sure – a tough competition awaits players. A new champ is just a fortnight away!

Prosper Utseya gets hat-trick in opposition to Southerly Cameras.

Utseya sparked a remarkable collapse as he claimed the wickets of Quinton de Kock, Rilee Rossouw and David Miller from consecutive deliveries before finishing with career-best figures of 5 for 36.
