Blasting records setting match of Roger Federer vs Sam Groth.

Roger Federer set a new record of 142mph
Roger Federer and Sam Groth shake hands after their second round match at the 2014 US Open.

Sam Groth put one awesome 142mph serve on Roger Federer – which he returned with interest – and that pretty much told the story of the Australian’s doomed project and the Swiss’s smooth progress into the third round of the 2014 US Open.

Federer, who is in as rich a vein of form as he has experienced for at least two years, survived a brief wobble near the end of their 108-minute match in the Arthur Ashe stadium on a cool Friday night to win 6-4 6-4 6-4. The symmetry was as pleasing as his 36 winners and nine aces, two of which arrived in his closing service game.

He will hope to improve on his numbers over the next week in pursuit of his sixth US title and 18th slam, an achievement that would reaffirm the dominance he and his peers once took for granted.

His next assignment is against Marcels Granollers, who took the tournament’s other giant server, Ivo Karlovic, out of the equation, coming through three tie-breaks to win an engrossing five-setter in nine minutes shy of four hours, not the ideal preparation for a match against a lingering genius with plenty of miles left in his 33-year-old legs.

When Groth broke to go 4-2 up in the third, his heart lifted, his eyes brightened and his racquet got just a little nervous. Within moments, he had surrendered the advantage as Federer found the gears to get back on serve.

Federer does not have those palpitations. His response was icy, ruthless and predictable.

The Swiss stepped up with familiar calm to serve for the match. His eighth ace took him to within a couple of points of the next round, and his ninth sealed it.

So, having been tantalisingly close to some kind of fame, Groth slipped back into relative anonymity, as the master of the age imposed his will on him to round it out, as we knew he would, with unruffled competence that occasionally touched brilliance. It is how you could describe so many of Federer’s matches in the first week of the 60 consecutive grand slam tournaments he has contested.

“I did really well from the start,” he said. “I was happy with the way I handled his serve. I knew he was going to come in, and I knew there would be opportunities when he came in.”

He reckoned the miracle return on Groth’s 142mph serve he might have done once before, perhaps against Andy Roddick, but such one-shot weaponry by Groth was never going to be enough to beat Federer even in third gear. He tried to mix it up, as well, but invariably ended on the wrong end of the exchanges, as Federer won 104 points to 84.

It was not perfect, nor did the performance indicate any weaknesses in Federer’s game that players at this level can exploit. That will not be the case from this point onwards. Now they are watching him like a hawk, ready to exploit any signs that the years have wearied him.

Federer, however, should complete a hat-trick of wins against Granollers when they meet on Monday and thereafter he will steel himself for a probable quarter-final against his junior doppleganger, Grigor Dimitrov, who first must get past David Goffin, who briefly tormented Federer at the French a couple of years ago.

“Granollers deserves to be there and I hope to be in shape for him in a couple of days,” Federer said.

However you compute it, Federer is in a good place. He has expended just enough energy to reach the first weekend and, if he has calculated his run as well as he normally does, he will have plenty in the tank for Granollers.

“You look at this guy at 33 and you think his days are numbered,” John McEnroe said, “then you think, wait a second, maybe his days aren’t numbered.”

Federer rarely loses under the lights in New York and this win took his score to 26-1. The numbers right now are in Federer’s favour.

Federer later reckoned his change of racquet has transformed his game, giving him “more easy power”. He told ESPN: “I think I made the right decision nine months ago, when things weren’t really going great. I’m not very stubborn. I’m open to change.”

He said he was “definitely playing with more confidence” than at Wimbledon, where he made the final. “If I’m moving well, I know good things can happen.”

That is a quietly scary message of intent to a field that has yet to settle down after five days.

Virat Kohli Has to Use His Brains Bette

r: Geoffrey BoycottWellington: Former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe has said Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steven Smith and Kane Williamson are the new "fabulous four" of Test Cricket but will go through "teething problems" before shooting for the stars.

Calling them "leading young bucks in Test cricket today", Crowe said - Williamson from New Zealand, Kohli from India, Root from England, and Smith from Australia "are seriously earmarked as future captains of their countries."

"Prior to hitting peak period for a Test batsman, between age 24 and 32, the young player will go through teething problems, highs and lows, swings of fortune, before shooting for the stars. If he is destined, he will learn quickly and climb the ladder to become the best of his time," he said in his column on a website.

Noting that all four have had a period of extreme failure, Crowe said they have the hunger to go on to be the best.

Detailing Kohli's career, Crowe said he started off on a high in one-dayers to become the heir apparent to Tendulkar.

"Then disaster struck. In his last ten innings he has hit absolute rock bottom, with a need to assess and start again. Despite a solid technique with no obvious weakness - which produced centuries in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand - he has found the late-swinging ball in England to be his nemesis. In short, his footwork needs to be more decisive in getting close to the ball, shutting down late movement," the New Zealand skipper said.

He said all four each shown one obvious weakness at some point, but not more than that.

"They have been able to overcome problems, with a permanent batting position locked down being the key. Only Kohli has shown a need to correct a glaring weakness exposed at this stage of development," he said.

Noting that all four have similar talent, hunger, ambition and responsibility, Crowe predicted that the four will go on to captain their respective countries.

"All four will reach peak form in a few years' time, and then the real battle will commence as to who will be the No. 1 batsman in the world," he said.

"My sense is that they will all take turns as the No. 1 Test batsman, while Kohli already has the one-day mantle in his sights. Maybe it is his prowess in, and preference for, the limited-over formats that will hold him back in Tests? Maintaining one's game while playing three different formats is the most challenging aspect confronting the modern-day batsman," he opined.

Rohit Established to Skip CLT20, Pollard Gonna Cause Mumbai Indians.

Star batsman Rohit Sharma's finger fracture is not only a blow to the Indian team but a big setback for Mumbai Indians as well, who will be playing in the qualifiers of the Champions League T20 starting September 13, in Raipur.

With Rohit sustaining a fractured middle finger during the second ODI against England at Cardiff, it is unlikely that he will play any part during MI's qualifying round matches in Raipur, which kicks off with a match against Lahore Lions.

As of now, dashing West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard looks a likely candidate to lead the popular T20 franchise.

"While Pollard is an automatic choice in the MI set-up, his success as the captain having led the Barbados Tridents to title triumph in the recently concluded Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will go in his favour. But Harbhajan should also be sounded out," a source in the know of things told PTI today.

Among the senior players, there is Harbhajan Singh, under whom Mumbai Indians won the Champions League T20 in 2012 but according to reliable sources is not too keen on leading the side. Harbhajan, who is fighting to make a comeback is more interested in performing well for the Mukesh Ambani-owned team.

Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga is also one of the senior players in the side and had also led Sri Lanka to ICC World T20 triumph after being handed over the captaincy mid-way due to sudden dip in Dinesh Chandimal's form.

Aussie batsman Michael Hussey's place in the playing XI is not assured, which can be a reason that he won't be considered for the hot-seat.

If fit and available, the four first-choice overseas players are likely to be Lendl Simons, Kieron Pollard, Corey Anderson and Lasith Malinga.

The MI will certainly be seeking a replacement for the injured Rohit, who incidentally also sustained a finger fracture during 2011 tour of England.

Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Ambati Rayudu, Pragyan Ojha, Praveen Kumar, Aditya Tare, Jalaj Saxena, Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Gopal, Michael Hussey, Kieron Pollard, Corey Anderson, Lasith Malinga, Marchant de Lange, Lendl Simmons.
